Best tips for your website

We’ve asked our web designers to offer a couple of their best tips on how you can create a site that will be seen and visited.

Make Sure the Search Engines Know Where to Find You

First things first: your SimpleSite is online from the moment you’ve created it, but it will not have been indexed by search engines yet. This tends to take two to five weeks. This means your website may not yet show up in the search results of for example Google and Bing if you type it in. You can speed up the process by submitting your URL (your web address, e.g. to Google and Bing (submitting your URL to Bing will automatically submit it to Yahoo, as well).

Choose the Purpose of Your Website

Before you add content to your website or even choose a color scheme, ask yourself: why? Why am I making this website, what am I trying to accomplish with it? If you can narrow it down to one primary purpose, it will be much easier to set up your website in a way that is logical for you, and intuitive for your visitors. Figure out what you want your visitors to do on your website, and add pages and content that caters to those actions.

Keep the Navigation Clean, Simple and Logical

Whatever the purpose of your website, you want to make sure it’s easy to navigate. If it’s too confusing or if there’s too many options in your menu your visitors will not stay on your website for long. You’re probably familiar with feeling frustrated yourself if you can’t find something on a website quickly enough.

Don’t make it unnecessarily hard for your visitors to find what they are looking for. They can always go to another website to find the information. Aim for clarity and simplicity in your menu and on your website, and you’ll see your visitor count increase for sure.

Brand and Distinguish Yourself

Branding yourself is only the first step. Settle on an online identity for your website – what colors suit you and the purpose of your site? What sort of images, if any? What tone of voice are you using? Are you professional or more personally-oriented, do you address your visitors formally or informally, and so on.

But it doesn’t stop there. Try to find websites similar to yours, and find out how you can set yourself apart from the crowd. Why should people go to your website instead of the dozen other websites out there? What makes you special, what particular thing do you have the others don’t? Celebrate your individuality, and showcase it on your website!

Test Your Website on Multiple Devices

SimpleSite websites are supported on computers, tablets and smartphones. It’s therefore a good idea to see what your website looks like on all these devices. If you’re used to editing your website on your computer, check what it looks like on your smartphone (and tablet, if you have one) every now and then as well.

Visitors of your website will be using a variety of these devices, so it’s good to know what they will be seeing when they visit your website. What makes sense on your computer website may not always work as well on mobile. You can use this website to test what your website looks like on various devices and screens.
